Get ready for a burst of sweetness! The renowned Nanshan lychee, the first lychee product in China to receive national geographical indication protection, is set to hit the market next month, promising a juicy treat for fruit lovers both near and far.
Fruit farmers at Xili Orchard, the largest lychee production base in Shenzhen, are busy with the final stages of cultivation, ensuring the premium quality that has made Nanshan lychees a sought-after delicacy. The farm, established in 1989, meticulously manages over 20,000 lychee trees across three major bases: Niucheng Village, Yueliang Bay Park, and Lilin Park.
This year's harvest is shaping up to be a bountiful one. Agronomist Zeng Yani at Xili Orchard reports a significant increase in the fruit setting rate compared to last year. Barring any extreme weather, Nanshan is anticipating a record-breaking yield of 5,000 tons, marking a high-yield year for this prized fruit.
The first wave of Nanshan's sweetness will arrive in early June with the early maturing Feizixiao variety. This will be followed by the mid-to-late maturing Guiwei and Nuomici varieties in mid-June. Currently, farmers are focusing on optimizing water and fertilizer management, controlling pests and diseases, and conducting the final preparations for the highly anticipated harvest.
In a unique twist this year, Xili Orchard is adding an element of exclusivity to the Nanshan lychee experience. Alongside their established "online+offline" sales channels, the orchard will be holding a "century-old tree picking right + naming right auction." Lychees from 199 trees over 100 years old will be up for grabs. The auction has already generated significant interest, with over 40 companies registering to participate.
