Nanshan District is grappling with the growing chaos associated with the surge in electric bicycle usage. Issues like haphazard parking, road obstructions, and unsafe charging practices are impacting traffic flow and posing safety risks. In response, the district is launching a comprehensive campaign to address these problems.
The initiative comprises four key action areas and 19 specific measures, focusing on:
Source control: Implementing a district-wide trade-in program for electric bicycles (including batteries).
Enforcement: Cracking down on traffic violations by electric bicycles, establishing a tiered control system for different road segments, and conducting targeted enforcement campaigns.
Parking and charging management: Enhancing public transportation connectivity through improved subway shuttle services, optimized bus routes near subway stations, and the introduction of community “micro-buses” and customized bus services.
Infrastructure development: Expanding and improving non-motorized vehicle lanes, accelerating their construction in new road projects, repurposing underutilized bus and auxiliary lanes, and reducing the width of motorized vehicle lanes when necessary to accommodate non-motorized traffic.
Recently, authorities inspected 56 sales outlets, leading to two investigations (including one for illegal assembly and modification of electric bicycles), the seizure of four modified vehicles, and six modified parts.
Nanshan remains committed to this ongoing effort, aiming to create a more livable and convenient travel environment for all residents by effectively managing electric bicycle usage.
